We Bill Sun Life Directly and Check Your Coverage Before Treatment
Two things make a CDCP appointment straightforward: someone bills Sun Life on your behalf, and someone checks what you are actually covered for before any work begins. We do both, and here is exactly how it works.
Direct billing to Sun Life
Sun Life administers the Canadian Dental Care Plan for the federal government. Providers who submit a CDCP claim agree to bill Sun Life directly for covered services, and the plan’s own rules are clear that CDCP patients should not be asked to pay the full cost upfront. There is no route for a patient to claim money back from Sun Life afterwards, which is why the billing has to be handled by the dental office. We submit the claim, and you pay only the portion the plan does not cover, if there is one. That portion depends on your adjusted family net income and on whether any part of your treatment sits outside what the plan pays for.
Coverage checked before treatment starts
The plan requires providers to confirm that you are eligible and that you are covered for the specific services being recommended, before that care is provided. We do that first and then talk you through what we found. Some treatments additionally need preauthorization, which means the plan confirms in advance whether it will pay for that particular procedure. That approval has to happen before the treatment, not after, so we prepare and submit the request for you. Not every request is approved. If yours is not, we tell you what the treatment would cost you before you decide whether to go ahead.
If a treatment plan includes anything the CDCP will not cover, you will hear it from us at the planning stage rather than at the front desk afterwards.

When will CDCP cover orthodontics?
Not yet. The federal program page lists orthodontic services as not currently available, states that a specific range of orthodontic services will be added at a date still to be determined, and confirms preauthorization will be required once they are.
